: Les Paul & The Les Paul.

: Les Paul & The Les Paul.

Sales of the original Les Paul guitar were faltering by 1960, and Gibson introduced a new double cutaway model to replace it in early 1961. Still called the Les Paul, the double cutaway shape was popular with just about everyone, except Les himself. He allegedly hated the shape, but he and wife Mary Ford put on their game faces and used the new model in this promo shot for 1962's "Warm & Wonderful." After 1963, when Les renegotiated his contract with Gibson, the Les Paul name was taken off the guitar, which became known from then on simply as the "SG" or "Solid Guitar."
