( 159 pages Researched by John C. Bass who died 2002)

Generation No. 1

1. HUMPHREY2 BASSE (WILLIAM1) was born 1564 in Middlesex Parrish, London, England, and died June 4, 1616 in Middlesex Parrish, London,
England. He married MARY BUSCHIER 1589 in England, daughter of DOMINICK BUSCHIER and GENEVIEVE CLERKE. She was born Abt. 1570 in Roanne, Loire, France, and died July 22, 1616 in Middlesex Parrish, London, England.

Notes for HUMPHREY BASSE:
The wills of Humphery Basse and Mary, his widow, were proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (registered 65 cope and 80 cope). He owned shares in the Virginia Company. He was a haberdasher and merchant of
London.

Humphrey's children, from 1589 to 1602 were baptized at the Church of Saint Gabriel, Fenchurch Street,
London. The last entry in the Parish Registry refering to Humphrey Basse is the record of the burial of son Thomas on February 21, 1603.

Beginning on
June 30, 1605 we find the family of Humphrey Basse at Saint Helen's Church, Bishopgate, London with the baptism of "Barnaby son of Humphrey Basse, Gyrdler & Mary". Five more of Humphrey's children were Christened there and Mary is listed as their mother. The last of these being Sara on June 27, 1615. Humphrey was buried at Ste. Helen's on June 4, 1616, followed by "Marye wife of Humfry Basse, Citized and Girdler of London, deceased", on July 22, 1616.

Notes for
MARY BUSCHIER:
Notes For Mary Buschier: (The Basse Family Of Black Creek, North Carolina, compiled by James Albert Bass and James Albert Bass Jr., 1986)

Mary Buschier was the daughter of Dominick Buschier, a native of Italy. He appears on several lists of aliens during the reign of
Elizabeth the First. Dominick's wife, Jane (Genevieve), is listed as a native of "Roane" (Roanne, near Lyon) in France. The name Buschier is more French than Italian. This suggests that Dominick was from the north west Italy.

Generation No. 2

2. NATHANIEL3 BASSE, CAPT. (HUMPHREY2, WILLIAM1) was born
December 29, 1589 in Middlesex Parrish, London, England, and died July 3, 1654 in Cripplegate, London, England. He married MARY JORDAN May 21, 1613 in Middlesex Parrish, London, England. She was born Abt. 1591 in London, Elgland, and died January 17, 1629/30 in Middlesex Parrish, London, England.

Notes for NATHANIEL BASSE, CAPT.:
Nathaniel Basse was christened,
December 29, 1589, at the Church of Saint Gabriel Church, Fenchurch St., London, England. Nathaniel was commissioned to bring settlers to the New World. On April 27, 1619, they arrived at Jamestowen, Virginia, founded in1607 (Isle Of Wight County,1608-1907) with one hundred settlers in a ship commanded by Captain Evans. They immediately settled near the mouth of a creek on the south side of the James River still known as Lawne's Creek. Captain Nathaniel Basse and others undertook to establish another plantation in the same neighborhood. This plantation was known as Basse's Choice and was situated on the Pagan River. Nathaniel was back in England in early 1621/22 and returned to Virginia in 1622. He was commissioned to seek colonists for Virginia in New England and elsewhere.

The houses of Captain Basse's plantation were being built when a great calamity happened to the infant colony. At
midday on Good Friday, March 22, 1622 there were twelve hundred fourty British inhabitants in the state of Virginia. Of these, three hundred forty seven were killed by Indians in the eighty settlements on the north and south sides of the James River, of which fifty three were residents of this county (Isle Of Wight County). At the house of Nathaniel Basse every one was slain. Nathaniel, who was in England at the time, escaped.

A muster of the inhabitants of
Virginia taken in 1625 includes Nathaniel Basse, age 35. Nathaniel was a member of the House of Burgesses in 1624,1625, 1628 and again in 1629. He was a Councillor in 1630.

Nathaniel Bass returned to England and is buried in Church of St. Alphage, Cripplegate, London England,
3 July 1654.

5. JOHN4 BASSE (NATHANIEL3, HUMPHREY2, WILLIAM1) was born

He married KEZIAH ELIZABETH TUCKER August 14, 1638 in Nasemond Indian Tribe, Virginia, daughter of ROBIN THE ELDER. She was born 1618 in Nansemond Indian Tribe, Virginia, and died December 4, 1676 in Norfolk, Nansemond, Virginia.

Notes for JOHN BASSE:
John Basse came as an infant with his mother and father to the
New World of Virginia. Jamestown was founded in 1607, nine years before John was born. According to genealogist, Alyene Prenn, the story related to her by Justin Bass, at the time Chief of the Nanesemond Tribe, was that John was the only survivor at Basse's Choice of the Good Friday massacre in 1622. John's father, Nathaniel had returned to England as presumably had his mother since she died in England in 1630. John was rescued from the carnage by Nasemond Indians and was taken to raise by them. John married a Nansemond Indian girl with the unusal name, for an Indian, of Keziah Elizabeth Tucker. Keziah's father's name was Robin the Elder. He was the "King", or Chief (Weroance) of the Nansemonds. Keziah took the name Elizabeth at her baptism, a not unusual occurrence at the time.

Notes for JOHN BASSE:
Notes for John Basse: The Bass Family of Black Creek, North Carolina, compiled by James Albert Bass and James Albert Bass Jr., 1986.

Intermarriage between Indians and whites were forbidden under Virginia law in the early 1690's. There were some migration across the line into North Carolina because of this law. John Basse may well have been one of the Virginians to have done so. The certificates indicate that John was certainly considered an Indian.

John Basse's marriage to Love Harris in 1696 was probably the first time one of our Basse ancestors was married outside the Church of England (the present Episcopal Church in this country) since the time of William the Conqueror in AD 1066. John and Love were married by Magistrate Samuel Swann, Esq. Probably the same Samuel Swann that Swansborro was named.

  6. I am wondering if this word document is still available. My grandmother was Edith Lorene Bass Keen and we are descendants of Captain Nathaniel Basse. I have been to Basse's Choice as well as the library in Richmond, VA researching my Bass(e) routes. Most of our family now lives in either Missouri or Washington State.
