George "Golden Hawk" SIZEMORE

  • ID: I047865

  • Sex: M

  • Name: George "Goldenhawk" SIZEMORE

  • Birth: 1783

  • Death: 9 MAY 1864 in Kentucky

  • Note:
Cherokee Indians had captured a white girl. While she was in their camp t he Chief fell in love with her. He made her his wife. Not long after, h er brothers snuck into that camp and took her back. She was pregnant at t he time. Her son was named George All Sizemore. Goldenhawk was a memb er of the Whitetop Laurel Band and was the Chief of the Prestonburg Ky. tribe. There are no portraits of Golden Hawk but he was a big man with gold colored hair. It has been said that he "was one of the ugliest men that ever was". Golden Hawk started dating Sally Anderson. Her two brothers objected to her dating an Indian so they tried to kill him. He fought well and took her to Ky. The records do not show what he did for a living but he was a land owner. He also maintained several families as his own. Go lden Hawk was indicted for bigamy in Floyd Co. Ky. The minutes from the he aring indicate that the Judge said, "Mr. Sizemore, I understand you have a bout 50 children." Golden Hawk replied, "I guess you are right. But Judg e, if I'd been half as pretty a man as you are, I'd had more than that." 1 860 Magoffin Census - Age 77 Born N.C. and living alone.

Residence: 19 June 1860 Licking Station, Magoffin, Kentucky

born in North Carolina ca. 1781; died in KY on 6 May 1864; married first S allie Anderson who reportedly died ca. 1842. Researcher Judy Salyer has re ported on the Magoffin Co, KY Sizemore genealogy website that Perry C o, KY records show the marriage of a George Sizemore to Mary Ann Woma ck on 15 May 1826. George is reported to have fathered 13 children by Pol ly Womack, but Eastern Cherokee Applications indicate that he and wife Sal lie Anderson had children as late as ca. 1837. He also was the fath er of at least six Sizemore children by Alethia (Richardson) Goodman, a nd in one court case is reputed to have said that he was the father of a t otal of 55 children. He is referred to in different records as "Gulden", " Goolden", "Goulden", "Golden" and "Goldenhawk". I am not aware of the sour ce of his nickname Goldenhawk or Golden, nor have I determined the sour ce of the nickname of his son William "Blackhawk" Sizemore. This George Si zemore and his son Blackhawk were both reported to be legendary figur es in the region of KY in which they resided. Many descendants of this Geo rge filed ECA's, with excerpts below:

ECA # 14255 filed in Jan. 1907 by Wood Sizemore gives his ancestry as: Wo od Sizemore, son of William "Blackhawk" Sizemore and Martha Milam, s on of George Sizemore who was a brother of Ned Sizemore, Henry Sizemore a nd John Sizemore. He then makes a statement that Ned and Henry Sizemore we re brothers to George Gulden Sizemore.

ECA # 37626 filed in Aug. 1907 by George B. Sizemore says he was born in 1 829 and gives his parents as George Sizemore and Alethia Ritchison. He lis ts 13 brothers and sisters including Katie Montgomery whose ECA is list ed next below. George B. also says he is a brother to Black Hawk and unc le of Wood Sizemore. ECA's # 37627-37630 filed by children of George sta te that George B. Sizemore's wife was Frankie Patton, daughter of David a nd Sally.

ECA # 14720 filed by Catherine Montgomery identifies her parents as Geor ge Sizemore and Sally Anderson, stating that they died in 1863 and 1842, r espectively. Catherine states that she was born 1831, and she names 10 bro thers and sisters born between 1817 and 1837. Says that father who di ed in 1863 was living in Magoffin County, KY in 1851. This ECA then creat ed confusion by giving the parents of George Sizemore as Henry Sizemore a nd (Swirup?) Anderson. Other ECA's seem to confirm that this George Sizemo re was a brother to the Ned and Henry Sizemore.

ECA # 32924 by William Sizemore of Water Gap, Floyd County, KY, born 183 9, son of William Hawk Sizemore and Mattie Milem. Says his grandparents we re George Gulden Sizemore and wife Sally Anderson who was born in Hawki ns County, TN. Lists his grandparents children as Elizabeth, Susan, Nanc y, Sarah, Florence, Catherine, Aggie, Vinia, William Hawk, John, and Granv ille Sizemore. Lists his brothers and sisters as John, Susan, Hiram and Wo odson Sizemore. Says his father died in May 1874, and his mother in Nov. 1 865. Says grandparents George Gulden Sizemore and Sally Anderson were resi dents of Floyd County, KY in 1851. Also lists his own 7 children born betw een 1866 and 1887.

ECA # 32577 by Alexander Montgomery of McNeal, Boyd County, KY, born 18 56 in KY, daughter of Samuel Montgomery and wife Katy Sizemore. Lists o ne grandparent-George Montgomery, says "blood comes from Black Hawk Indi an Chief." Names three children of unnamed grandparents, ie. Katy Sizemo re Montgomery, George Sizemore and Granville Sizemore.

ECA # 25138 by Syrenna Matney of Hallsville, McDowell Co, WV,age 49 (th us b. ca.1858), daughter of George and Polly Sizemore. Says that her fath er and mother were born in GA or NC, and that their dates of death are unk nown. Names siblings as Rachel, Polly, Caley, Jenny, and William Sizemor e, and names her four children.

ECA # 37401 by Lena Strublen of Ashland, Boyd Co, KY, born 1875, daught er of John R. and Alifair (Prater) Patton, and wife of Edward Strublen a ge 43. Says her grandparents were Allen and Jenny (Sizemore) Patton, and N ewman and Montia Prater. Names children of her grandparents as Floridni da Patton Allen, Minton Patton, Rebecca (Patton)Prater, Betty Whitt, Kat ie Stenbo, Wesley Patton and Bunyon Patton. Says her father died 1900 a nd mother is living. Names five siblings. (RLB note: I believe that this a nd the prior ECA refer to two daughters of George Gulden Sizemore by Ma ry Ann "Polly" Womack, but have not yet proven that supposition.)
