Hello,
My name is Peggy.  I am writeingafter looking at the information  on you homepage.  Elijah Gibson was my grandfather, son of William Gibson, son of Sarah Collins. Recently my mother took her brother to see his mothers grave.  You have it as "Hulyd Backwman".  However my mother said it should be "Mahulda Bowman". However she was called 'Huldy" most of her life.   Elijah Gibson and Huldy had seven children before she died in 1918 dureing the flu epedimic.. Elijah then married Ethel Stepp, daughter of Robert and Mary Stepp Elijah and Ethel had nine more children.  My mother is the baby of the sixteen kids. Also, Elijah and Huldy had a daughter "Stella Gibson" who died at about age five.
My mother is working on getting all the names and dates from our family ready for me so I will have all
info from Elijah on down. If you are interested please feel free to write and I will send info as soon as I have it.  And any info you would care to share would be great.  Is Thomas Collins born 1770 as far back as you have?             Thank YOU,       Peggy (Peggy Vaughan, plv6262@yahoo.com, 3/30/2000)

160.  Sanders6 Collins (Hiram5, Sanders A.4, Larkin3, Thomas2, Samuel1) was born May 02, 1884 in Martin Co., KY, and died March 10, 1919 in Logan Co., WV.  He married Naomi Frances Mosley August 29, 1904 in Inez, Martin Co., KY, daughter of John Mosley and Susannnah Hobbs.  She was born October 02, 1887 in Inez, Martin Co., KY, and died August 16, 1989 in White Sulphur Springs, Greenbrier Co., WV.

Notes for Sanders Collins:
!SOURCE:
BIRTH:  From wife, Frances Mosley Clark; although she stated he was born in
WV, her children said he was born in Inez, KY.  Since she was very elderly at
the time she gave me his birth information, it seems more likely he was born
in KY than in WV.  There is no listing of Sanders Collins in Logan Co., WV in 1910.
DEATH:  From wife, Frances Mosley Clark; died of penumonia; probably the date of 1918 is correct; she said he died on Whitmans Creek, Logan Co., WV.
MARRIAGE:  Marriage Records; Certificate on file.
According to Esther Frances Collins, daughter, Sanders died 3/10/1918.

According to Frances Clark, Sanders raised in Webb, WV, and was a preacher, was 34 when he died.

CENSUS:  1900 Wayne Co., WV, Soundex C-635, Vo. 21, Sheet 20, L-53, Enum. Dist. 89, Harvey Dist:  John B. Sartin b. Apr. 1872, 28, b. CENSUS:  1910, Martin Co., KY, #182/182, P-11B, L-63, Apr. 29, 1910; Sanders Collins, 25 KKK; Frances 21, mar. 6 yrs, 2 children born, 2 living; Paul S., 2 Dorothy M. 10/12, all b. KY.

When Sanders died, unions were organizing and there was much trouble. Mrs. Clark stated that Sanders was left handed, had black hair, blue eyes, was 5'10", medium build.   This is the same description as his father, Hiram.

After the death of Hiram, Fanny stayed with Oma Sartain and Sanders stayed with the Brumfields in Webb.

Mrs. Clark used to go to the Alleys house to play with the three Alley girls. That family was very wealthy.

:  Mr. Shumaker was good to Mrs. Clark in Huntington.  Mr. Clark got hurt in Huntington and was out of work.  He was in an auto accident and went to live with his sister, Lena Lewis.  During this time that Mr. Clark lived in the Shumaker's house, he worked in a store.  He was an awful drinker. Gave Paul a
job driving a truck.  Mrs. Clark was supposed to go to Fort Springs )but did not go.  (Greenbrier Co.)  Mr. Clark got a job in Ronceverte in a man's barber shop so they moved to Ronceverte.  Willie and Dorothy went to Covington to get jobs, and in 1929 or 1930 they all moved to Covington.  (This info. from mother,
Esther, Dorothy, Mrs. Clark)

Mrs. Clark stated that when she was of school age, there was only 5 mo. of schooling a year.  The teacher wanted her in school so she went until the 7th grade.  Said her father was pretty well off and that he married 4 times.  Said her mother and grandmother (Susan Hobbs Mosley and Margaret Horn Hobbs) smoked clay pipes.  They grew their own stems in the yard and smoked after supper. Mrs. Clarks wedding clothes were made at home.  A long white dress with big ruffles, couldn't get white shoes so wore dark ones.

She also said that her grandmother and grandfather Mosley died before she was born, that her father (John Mosely) was a good farmer, lived on a big farm, danced at night, did not whip the children, butchered 12 hogs at one time, always fed everyone from the garden.  Raised sugar and corn and made corn meal. Mrs. Clark went to the mill and ground the corn, rode horse side saddle and shwed horses to sell.  had one named Sealem who would bow.  Visited Uncle Riley and Aunt Josie who lived 15 miles away. Went to church one night and had one boy with her, a cousin had another one.  When they got to where there was some light, discovered they had switched boys and didn't know it.

Her grandfather, John Hobbs, was wounded in the war.  He walked on crutches and liked apple pie and sweet milk, according to her memories.

Rosa Mosley, sister of Frances, stated that Clarence was given to his uncle and lived underground (in a root cellar, I believe) in Kermit and that Dorothy also lived there. That Rosa took the Collins children when Curtis Horn was three days older than Frank and Frank was 1 year old. She took all the children except Esther and Clarence.

Mrs. Clark stated she gave Esther away to Bonnie Dunn when Esther was 11 mo. old.  Mr. Collins was sick a long time, they lived in a company house and when he died she had to move, no place to go.  Bonnie's husband worked at the same mine, she said Bonnie  wanted to take Esther and Paul.  They were given to her and Bonnie and husband went to Marietta, Ohio.  Mrs. Clark said she didn't know where Esther was but found out through Bonnie's sister.  Dorothy said Mrs. Clark did not want Esther back but Bonnie wanted to give Esther back and keep Paul.  Bonnie wrot eto Mrs. Clark to come and get Esther.  Bonnie was running a "bad" house and making shine.  Mr. Dunn had died and Bonnie was living with another man.  Dorothy went to Ohio from Ronceverte and brought Esther back. Esther was 11 and did naot want to come back because she thoguht Bonnie was her mother.  Esther was skinny and looked awful.  Years later, they told Esther that Mrs. Clark was her mother.  Esther was a mean child and not much better as she got older.  This information given me by about 1980.

On her marriage certificate:

There comes a day
When love that lies asleep
The fairest islands in the Mighty Deep
Wakes on our Sight
There we do stay a while
But soon again
We trim our sails to seek
the open main
And now, whatever winds
and waves betide
Two friendly ships are sailing
Sie by Side

She wore a lace corset, wrapped strings around the bed and tightened the corset.  Nanny Crum and Millie Alley were her friends, she said they dressed alike, Sanders A. bought the shoes she wore for her wedding.

Frances had a child by Judge Bailey of Martin Co, Frank Fullard Clark, Jr.  According to Frank he always thought his father was Frank Clark but that he was just "early".  Aunt Rosa Mosley Horn stated that Judge Bailey and Frances used to take the mattress off the bed in the hotel and put it on the floor for their "fooling around".  When she was pregnant, he gave her the money to go to Boyd County to have her child because he had family there.  Judge Bailey related to the Fairchilds. He was a judge in 1917.

Hi Louise,
Hope your health is holding up in the cool in Fla.
It is absolutely miserable weather here - snow and Frigid. and we have been sick from who knows what.
I got a letter from Bettie Collins Hensley this week with what we wanted to hear on one subject - Cinthia Collins , last wife of James Garrett "Gar" Hensley -  WAS NOT the sister of his wife Julie Ann or Lucinda/Cinde who married J. G. Jr.  She was the daughter of Mary Jane Collins (Finley's sister) and Ike Gibson.  "Granny Jane"and Finley had two other brothers, Watson and Sanders according to Bettie.  Now if I can convince Wilson I. Hensley on the Hensley exchange.  I wish the Collins had a private exchange like that.

I haven't done much more on the Vardy and Emily search as I have been trying to help my sister-in-law with my family brick walls, before MS and Cancer gets her pretty soon.  Once again between the census takers and the people lieing it makes things a hunt.  After both of us looking for about six years for my mothers father - I found the whole family in the 1920 Census in Wisconsin of all places.  Never had a clue. From PA to ILL and Mich. yes.  We had one McKinney relative in Mich. who married a Gibson - I thought I was going to be back in KY again,  still might.

Well I hope we manage to get through this bitter winter to better days.  If you find any more documentation on Cinthia let me know.  I am certainly still looking for which Vardie that married Bettie Maxie is Emily's parents.
I suppose my son who wanted to know all this the most - knows now.

Sincerely - God Bless
Beverly (BevsParrThomas@aol.com on 1/26/03)

BIRTH:  Info,. from Wilson Hensley.
DEATH:  Same; age  89 years 7 months and 4 days.
MARRIAGE:  Same.

I was 27 years old when my Grandfather, Wilson Hensley died. I vividly remember my grandfather as a mild, gentle man who worked slow but steadily. He loved to whittle, making whistles and such for me and my brothers when we were there to see them when we were young.
He did a lot of things that impressed me, such as catching the largest catfish I've seen in my lifetime using only a safety pin tied to a length of bailing twine. Another of which was digging a water well by hand when he was 85 years old.
He seldom talked idly, when he spoke it was because he had something he wanted to say or was in response to something someone had asked him. I never saw him mad or upset and never once heard him raise his voice above a normal conversational tone.
He grew hard of hearing and almost blind during the last few years of his life. He wasn't tall in stature, but he was a big man in my eyes.
On 1 November 1970 in an oral interview with him, I asked him his brothers, sisters, half-brothers and half-sisters names. He told me his father had fathered 21 children as listed below:
Wilson, Sid, James, John, Esaw, Phillip, Sanders, Jim, Bert, Ewell, Ike, Finley, Sam, Major, Martha, Mary, Polly, Jane, Nancy, Nicey and Mattie.
At that time he also stated to me that he was born 4 December 1885 in Wise, Virginia, but I've never been able to find anything else that substantiates this. His brother Finley Hensley may have been born in November 1885 based on information in the 1900 Letcher Co., Kentucky Federal Census, so both of their birth years are questionable.
His Social Security Number was: 406-05-9663.

OBITUARY (from Banks Funeral Home, Whitesburg, Kentucky)

OBIT:  WILSON HENSLEY, son of the late Garrett and Julia Ann Collins Hensley, was born in Harlan County, Kentucky, December 4, 1885, passed from this life at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital, July 8, 1975, being 89 years 7 months and 4 days of age at the time of his passing.

He is survived by the following children: one daughter, Bonnie Adams of Sandlick, Whitesburg, Kentucky; two sons, George Hensley of Louisville, Kentucky, Glenn Hensley of Marron, Ohio, 2 sisters, Nicey Smith of Legitte, Kentucky and Polly Pridemore of Bristol, Virginia; one brother of Legitte, Kentucky, 9 grand children and several great-grand children.

Wilson was a retired miner and a member of the Pentecostal Church.

During an interview with my mother, Mary Elizabeth (Collier) Hensley on Thursday 13 January 2000, she told me the following:
Papaw WIlson Hensley was the night clerk at the Daniel Boone Hotel in Whitesburg, Letcher Co., Kentucky when she and Dad got married.  They lived in one large room at the back of the Hotel.  Dad's bedroom suite was at one end of the room and his mom and dad's was at the other end.
Mamaw Sillar never was well after dad was born.  She died of gall bladder problems.  Mom said Mamaw prayed she'd live long enough to see Dad's baby once.  She saw my older brother one time on Sunday.  Mom and Dad went down on the evening traing from Millstone to Whitesburg.  She died the following Thursday.

Sally was the only grandmother I knew on my dad's side of the family, my
grandfather's first wife had passed away before I was born.
I was Sally's favorite and she left money for mom and dad to buy me a new suit when she passed away.
I remember her as a tall, thin woman who thought about others more than
            herself.

Maude was a small, frail woman, who wore glasses and was a registered
republican. I always took her elephant figurines and things which might identify with the Republican political party each time I visited because she always said "You old Democrat" to me when she wanted to get me into a heated debate about politics.
She loved Chihuahua puppy dogs and had several over the years I knew her. She was the daughter of grandpa's second wife by a previous marriage.
