  Article from Ronceverte newspaper, no date:  At the Young People's conference of the Synod of West Virgiia now in a ten-days session at G. M. S. Lewisburg, the following young people of the Ronceverte Prebyterian Church are in attendance:  Misses Virginia Perryman, Mary Margaret Lee, Mary Elizabth Betts, Margaret Jordan, Charlotte Erwin, Helen dolin, Mary Wilson Grove, Oleta Arritt and Charles George, Edward Dunn, John Jackson, Marshall Casdorph, J. Gordon Townly and William Lee.

  On to High School:  Twenty-one graduates from the eighth grde of the city public schools and five from the East Ronceverte Schools, were presented with elementary school diplomas by Superintendent Alex. Thompson at the execises in the auditorium of Greenbrier High School last Wednesday night:

OBIT:  Virginia Beach-Oleta M. Pitcher, 92, went to be with the Lord June 10, 2002.

  She was born in Ronceverte, W.Va., to the late John L. Arritt and Nita Greene Arritt and was also predeceased by her loving husband of 42 years, Grant L. Pitcher.  She was a member of London Bridge Baptist Church where she sang with the Echos.  She was also secretary at Indian River Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School.

  She is survived by two daughters, Hilda V. Triplett and husband, Bob of Virginia Beach and Lousie M. Perkins and husband, David, of Florida; five grandchildfren; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and other loving relatives.

  A funeral will be held at 11 am. Friday at hte chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home and Crematory by the Rev. Ronald W. Lee with burial in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

OBIT:  Willie Franklin Collins, 77, a resident of Elkins, died at 12:43 on Wed.

in the Davis Memorial Hospital where he had been admitted Tuesday morning.

  He was b. 26 Mar 1916, at Logan, a son of the late Sanders & Frances Mosley

Collins.

  On 13 Aug 1938 he was united in marriage to Dorothy "Dolly" Collins, who

survives.

  Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Esther Outlaw, Norfolk, VA and Mrs.

Dorothy McCutchen, White Sulphur Springs; one brother, Frank Clark, Augusta, GA

and several nieces and nephews.

  He was also preceded in death by one infant son, Randy, and three brothers.

  Mr. Collins attended the schools of Greenbrier Co.  He was employed by Brown

& Williamson Tobacco Co. of Petersburg, VA when retired in 1962.  He was a

member of the Mountain Top Christian Assembly Church of Montrose.

In 1939 he and Dorothy lived at 827 Kadel St., So. Covington (Rayon Terrace) and Frankie lived with them.

  Mr. Collins, formerly of Letcher County, was the husband of Roxie Collins and the son of the late Finley and Emily Collins.

  In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Fannie and Mae Collins and Mary Mitchell, all of Covington; four brothers, Sam Collins of cincinnati, Buster Collins of Erlanger, and Ervin and John Cololins, both of Isom; and two sisters, Mae Collins and Bettie Hensley, both of Isom.

  Burial was in the Carter Cemetery at Whitley City.

  Funeral services were held January 20 at Everidge Funeral Home in Whitesburg.

Burial was at the Collins Cemetery at Little Colley.

Drive, Colonial Heights, died Wednesday, May 20, 1992.  A native of Petersburg,

he was son of the late Paul S. Collins, Sr. and was an operator at Phillip

Morris.

  He is survived by his wife, Teresa M. Collins, of Newcastle; a son, Jamie B.

Collins, of Chesterfield, his mother, Myrtle H. Collins, of Colonial Heights;

two sisters, Diane Lavoie, of Daytona Beach, FL, Frances Belcher, of Richmond;

two brothers, Clayton Collins, of Carson, Paul S. Collins, Jr. of Renton, Wash;

and nieces and nephews.

   Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 1992, in the

chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, in Colonial Heights with the Rev. Dr.

Bob Duncan.  Interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Park in Chester. The

family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Motorcycle skidded when he tried to avoid being hit by a car, helmet was split

open, died instantly.

NOTE:  Frances Belcher is Sue Collins Belcher, his half sister, and Clayton is

the half brother.  In 1994, his widow, Teresa and his brother, Paul, were

living together.

Motorcycle rider killed in accident-Chesterfield-A county man was killed Wednesday night when the motorcycle he was riding slammed into the back of a pickup truck on Woodpecker Road.

  Jame E. Collins, 43, of the 3700 block of Colonnade Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, in the 4700 blocxk of Woodpecker Road.  Collins' 1992 Harley Davidson struck the right rear of the 1988 Ford F-600  pickup truck being driven by Preston A. Parham. Parham, who lives in the 2400 block of Parham Lane, was attempting a left hand turn into a driveway.

  Collins was ejected from his motorcycle.  The accident is still under investigation by S. A. Early of the Chesterfield Crash Team.

The Announcer, Page 3:  (High School Paper) Miss Hall Entertains Girl Basketballers:  The girls basketball team journeyed into high society March 17 to Miss Hall's "suite" in "upstate" Rosedale for a hilarious girls' party. Included in the night's festivities were post-office (without boys?), games "of change" portrait posing, eats (everything except the kitchen sink) and lovely couples waltzing all over each other's feet.  After the "inmates" were duly exhausted, they all cuddled down on the luscious rugs (Ha!) with philosophical reading matter and highballs (nothing stronger than tea).  As the mill whistle blew for the night shift, the debutantes made their way, wearily homeward.  (I remember this as the most fun I ever had at a party).

Girls Defeat Central:  On February 10 the Cougarettes defeated the Central girls 21 to 10.  Miss Hall, the girls coach reported that the second string played better than the first string because of better passing, shooting and team cooperation.  An unusually good zone defense kept the opposing team from

making many points.

Cougarettes Down Their Old Rivals:  The Cougarettes added another victory to their schedule by defeating the Clifton Forge girls, 30-10.  The game was rough and tough all the way through for both teams.  The Cougarettes took the lead in the beginning and never lost it.  The very first play for the Cougarettes worked with Johnson taking the ball in center who threw it to Persinger who in return threw it back to Johnson who made a basket, which put the Courgarettes in the lead.  The first play for the Clifton Girls was unsuccessful with the Covington guards bringing the ball up the Court.  All members of the team were able to play.

  Null and Persinger were high scorers with 10 points each.  Norma Johnson and Betty Hall were very unfortunate or rather tough by getting fouled out of the game.  Neda Matheny was unable to play in he game because of a sprained wrist.

 The score reads as follows:  Johnson 0-0 2; Plott 2-2 4; Persinger 0-3 10; Null 2-2 10; Burley 2-3 4; Collins, Hall and Jones were guards.

Lady Basketeers Defeat Former Coach's Charges:  The Cougarettes romped over Miss Dottie Sue Simmon's team of Fincastle by a score of 38-19. Johnson was high scorer with 14 followed by Persinger with 10.  High scorer for Fincastle was Slusser with 12 followed by Lyons with 5. Players:  Matheney, Persinger, Johnson, Plott, Null, Burley, Ginger; Guards were Collins, Jones and Hall.

Cougarettes Suffer First Loss to Wilson Memorial Team:  Wilson Memorial handed the Courgarettes their first defeat 13-1.  Neda Matheny scored the only point for Cougarettes.  High scorer for Wilson was Staples with a 8 followed by Snider with 3.

The Tally Thus Far:  The following is the score of the games that the Cougarettes had played to the date of February 9, 1949:  Covington 42-Westvaco 14; Covington 12-Central 8; Covington 28; Fincastle 19; Covington 1-Wilson Mem. 13; Covington 22-Westvaco 12; Covington 30-Clifton Forge 16.

Girls Scrimmage with Dunlap:  A large crowd of the students watched the Cougarettes take a victory from Dunlap.  Miss Hall chose Louise Collins for acting captain.  The starting line-up was:  Forwards:  Betty Plott, Marian Burley and Betty Null.  Guards: Louise Collins, Carol Wolfe and Mickey Stone. All the girls who were out got to play.  The high scorer was Doris Persinger. The high scorer for Dunlap was Ruth Poague. The final score was 56-28. The scoring was a follows:  Persinger, 16; Matheny 14; Johnson, 12; Null 8; Plott 4; McBee 2.

Eileen Andrews to be Editor of 1949 "Puffs and Patches".  Julian Turner, Louise Collins and Tommy Loving Hold Other Important Positions on Staff. This is Louise Collins' first year on the Annual Staff and she is senior editor.  She has played basketball for three years, been a member in the Monogram Club for three years.  Last year she was the secretary and treasurer of the Monogram Club.  During her first year at the high school, she was in the Sports Club. Last year Louise was the assistant editor of the Announcer.

Girls Monogram Club Elects Officers:  This month the Girl's Monogram Club elected their officers.  Those elected were Doris Persinger, President; Doris Knick, Vice-president; Louise Collins, Secretary and Treasurer. Louise Collins has played guard on the basketball team two years, has been member of Monogram Club two years and is the assistant editor of the Announcer.  She was a member of the Girls Sports Club.

Cougarettes continue Successful Season With Six Victories:  The Cougarettes have chalked up six victories and one defeat, so far this season. Their only loss was to Fisherville on the Cougarettes home court.

  The White Sulphur game was by far the most exciting game of the season, with both teams getting a little rough.  High scorers for that game was Barbara Graham who made ten points before she was fouled out.  Betty Hall played an outstanding game for the defense.  Final score-25-20.

  In he Central game, Neda Matheny, who played four quarters, took the scoring honors with 8 points, while Graham followed with seven.  The final score of that game was 29 to 16.   The Cougarettes took the Lexington lassies by a margin of 10 points, In the last half of the game, Edith Coleman made a beautiful hook shot to make her total number of points 8.  Persinger scored 15 points to take the scoring honors

for the season.  The final score was 36-26.

  The guards and forwards who proved the most valuable in the three games are: Barbara Graham, Forward, Betty Hall guard.  White Sulphur game; Neda Matheny forward, Carol Wolfe, guard; Central game; Doris Persinger forward; Louise Collins guard.

  Tuesday, February 24, the Cougarettes traveled to Fisherville and Thursday, February 26, Lexington came here to try to make up for their loss to Covington earlier this month.  The last game will be played March 2 on Covington's home court.  Further information of the most recent games will appear in the next issue of the Announcer.

P. Jones Memorial Library in Covington.  She lived n Idlewilde and discovered that her ancestors all lived on Potts Creek.  They were the Armentrouots, Wolfs, Arritts, and Terrys, plus the various colalteral lines.

  Louise Collins Perkiins was graduated from Covington High School in 1949, and two years later went into the service.

  Speaking again of a small world, Louie Collins Perkins was stationed at Selfridge Air Force Base, Michigan.  "Since I loved basketball so much in High School, "she said, "I naturally played on the girls team in the Air Force.  We flew to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, to play in the first women's inter-service tournament ever held.  While I was on the court, I heard my name, turned to look and there was Bettie Sue Null, who had been a junior when I was a senior at Covington High School."

OBIT:  Virginia Beach-Christopher Stephen Hall, 36, of the 600 Block of Johnson St., went peacefully to be with the Lord on Jan. 20, 2002, at his residence.

  He was born in Arlington, Va., and was a former manager at Taco Bell.  He was a member of Princess Ann Plaza Baptist Church, where he was actively involved with the youth group.  He was a U. S. Navy veteran.

  Survivors include his wife, Deborah L. Hall, two stepsons, Robert Schieber of Portsmouth and Joshua Kimm of Virginia Beach, his mother, Elizabeth Gill and her husband Timothy of Fredericksburg, Va., his father, Jon Hall and his wife, Patty of Slidell, La., three sisters; one brother; and numberous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

  A funeral will be conducted at 1 pin Woodlawn Memorial 1 p.m. Thursday in Princess Ann Plaza Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronald Lee.  Burial will  in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.  The family will recceive friends at the home of Jeff Triplett, 625 Johnson St., Virginia B bech, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.  Holloman-Brown Funerfal Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, is handling arrangments.

Ira Jasper Allen Jr. (Virginian Pilot, Norfolk, VA, Mar. 28, 2002)

CHESAPEAKE -- Ira Jasper ``I.J.'' Allen Sr., 86, of the 3900 block of Rokeby Ave., went to be with the Lord on March 25, 2002, in a local hospital.

He was a retired construction worker, a member and Elder Emeritus of the Laurel Avenue Church of Christ. He was also an avid race car fan.

He is survived by his wife, Verda B. Allen; four sons, Daniel G. Allen, Ira J. ``Jack'' Allen and A.D. Allen of Chesapeake and Timothy B. Allen of Smithfield, Va.; a sister, Fanny Harris of Pantego, N.C.; and a brother, Leamon Allen of Pantego; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, with the Rev. Rupert Wallace officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
