1. AMATOYA1 MOYTOY was born Abt. 1640 in Chota, Cherokee Nation, East TN. He married QUATSY. She was born Abt. 1650 in Tellico, Cherokee Nation, East TN.

Notes for AMATOYA MOYTOY:
There were two Chief Moytoys. The first was Chief Amatoya Moytoy of Chota, born about 1640 who married Quatsy of Tellico (of the Wolf Clan). The second is Chief Moytoy aka The Pigeon of Tellico born about 1687. The second Moytoy is believed to be either the son or grandson of Amatoya Moytoy.
It is believed that Amatoya Moytoy had 3 sons and 8 daughters. These include Chief Kana-gatoga (Old Hop) and Nancy Moytoy. Nancy Moytoy is believed to have been the mother of Chief Attakullakulla "Little Carpenter", Killaneca the Buck, Betsy and Tame Doe. Tame Doe was the mother of Tsistuna-Gis-Ke (Nancy Ward) and Longfellow of Chistatoa.

The Eastern Band of Cherokee, by John R Finger, Univ of TN Press, Knoxville:
[Early Cherokee society was atomized into clans with individual chiefs]...
Sir Alexander Cuming boldly addressed this problem in 1730 by traveling to Cherokee country and proclaiming a single chief, Moytoy, as the first chief and King of his people.
*********************************
Moytoy : a Cherokee chief recognized by the English as "emperor" in 1730. Both the correct form and the meaning of the name are uncertain; the name occurs again as Moyatoy in a document of 1793; a boy upon the East Cherokee reservation a few years ago bore the name of Ma’tayi, for which no meaning
can be found or given.

Old Frontiers, by John P Brown, also details a Moytoy of Settico who was rampaiging through VA after the death of "Emperor" Moytoy of Tellico.

4. OLD2 HOP (AMATOYA1 MOYTOY) was born Abt. 1690 in Chota on Little Tennessee River, and died August 1761 in Chota on Little Tennessee River. He married SU-GI. She was born Abt. 1700.

Notes for OLD HOP:
From Old Frontiers, pg 46:
"The chief selected as Moytoy's successor was Kana-gatoga of Chote, known to the white men as Old Hop because he was lame. His Cherokee name, Kana-gatoga means 'Standing Turkey.'
"Old Hop was an unselfish leader of his people, and was recognized by all as being the actual head of the nation. Even the Little Carpenter, whose influence was unbounded, deferred to the judgment and wishes of Old Hop.
"Old Hop has been confused by some historians with Oconostota. His name has been variously spelled owing to the difficulty of Cherokee pronunciation, as Conacorte, Kanatuckgo, Cunnicatogue, Conogtocke, etc. The correct Cherokee form is Kana-gatoga, from kana (turkey) and gatoga (standing).
"Old Hop was advanced in age when he was chosen as Moytoy's successor. There are numerous references in the correspondence of the time indicating him as an old man. Governor Lyttleton wrote him in 1756: 'As I hear you are old and unable to walk to Charles Town, though I very much wish for it, I cannot expect to see you.'"

From Old Frontiers, pg 67:
"Old Hop in his talk to Demere, gave unusual evidence of patriotism. He said, 'I am now old and lie upon a bad bearskin. My life is not more than an inch long, and I know not when a bullet may cut it short. I want my brothers Captains Demere and Stuart to remember that the Great Warrior, Oconostota, and his brother are the only two men in the nation that ought to be thought of after my death.
"'It is true that Willenawah and the Little Carpenter are my nephews, but I do not know how they would behave. If I had not remembered what I owe to a country I love, and had in mind to behave like a father, I would recommend my two sons, but I know them to be incapable, and biased by every lie that comes. I do not know how they will turn out, but I do know the others, for drunk or sober, they always admonish the Indians to love the white people.'"

Old Hop died shortly before the end of the Cherokee-English war of 1760-1761. Little Carpenter announced his death to the council as noted in "Old Frontiers", page 115:

"Our Headman, Old Hop, is gone to sleep, and the Standing Turkey is come into his room, but he has little to say, being just come to the government. The other chiefs present will remember how strongly Old Hop recommended to the nation to live in peace and friendship with the white people."
(Note: The Standing Turkey referred to in this paragraph is the nephew of Old Hop.)

From Old Frontiers, pg 46:
"Old Hop had a nephew, also named Standing Turkey, an active warrior who at his uncle's death served a short time as his successor. It was the younger Standing Turkey who conducted a four day assault upon Fort Loudoun in 1760, and who signed the articles of capitulation of the stronghold."

In old Cherokee culture there were generally three leaders in each town/village. The Red Chief was the "War Chief," he dealt with war, and was in charge of trading and other outside contact. The White Chief was the "Peace Chief," he led during peace time and controlled civil affairs. There was also a High Priest or conjuror. A good example is the old city of Echota. This town was headed by Attakullakulla (white chief), Oconostota (red chief), and Old Hop (high priest).

I have read that the Wolf Clan and the Paint Clan are sometimes referred to as "the Red clan." because of having many of the Red Chiefs coming from its members.

*******************************************
A noted Cherokee chief, recognized by the British government as the head chief or "emperor" of the Nation, about 1760 and later, and commonly known to the whites as the Little Carpenter (Little Cornplanter, by mistake, in Haywood). The name is frequently spelled Atta-kulla-kulla, Ata-kullakulla
or Ata-culculla. It may be rendered "Leaning wood," from ata’, "Wood" and gul kalu, a verb implying that something long is leaning, without sufficient support, against some other object; it has no first person form. Bartram describes him as "A man of remarkably small stature, slender and of a delicate frame, the only instance I saw in the Nation; but he is a man of superior abilities."

Dragging Canoe aka Tsi’yi-gunsi’ni, Tsu-gun-sini, Chuconsene, Cheucunsene, Kunnesee, the Savage Napoleon
**************************
Tsi’yi-gunsi’ni :
"He is dragging a canoe," from tsi’yu, canoe (cf. Tsi’yu) otter, and gunsi’ni, "he is dragging it." "Dragging Canoe," a prominent leader of the hostile Cherokee in the Revolution. The name appears in documents as Cheucunsene and Kunnesee. (Starr also lists him as Chuconsene)
***************************
As a 12-14 year old boy he was told he couldn't go with the war party unless he could drag the fully loaded war log canoe on land into the water. His enthusiasm and endeavors earned him the name Tsi'ui-Gunsin'ni "Dragging Canoe". This was circa 1750 when his father Atakullakulla led war parties against the French & their Native allies, including Shawnee, in the Ohio Valley.

- Chief Dragging Canoe, Chickamauga Tsalagi (Cherokee) 1775
"Whole Indian Nations have melted away like snowballs in the sun before the white man's advance. They leave scarcely a name of our people except those wrongly recorded by their destroyers. Where are the Delawares? They have been reduced to a mere shadow of their former greatness. We had hoped that the white men would not be willing to travel beyond the mountains. Now that hope is gone. They have passed the mountains, and have settled upon Tsalagi (Cherokee) land. They wish to have that usurpation sanctioned by treaty. When that is gained, the same encroaching spirit will lead them upon other land of the Tsalagi (Cherokees). New cessions will be asked. Finally the whole country,
which the Tsalagi (Cherokees) and their fathers have so long occupied, will be demanded, and the remnant of the Ani Yvwiya, The Real People, once so great and formidable, will be compelled to seek refuge in some distant wilderness. There they will be permitted to stay only a short while, until they again behold the advancing banners of the same greedy host. Not being able to point out any further retreat for the miserable Tsalagi (Cherokees), the extinction of the whole race will be proclaimed. Should we not therefore run all risks, and incur all consequences, rather than to submit to further loss of our country? Such treaties may be alright for men who are too old to hunt or fight. As for me, I have my young warriors about me. We will hold our land."

[The Indigenous Peoples: "Indians" in North America before the European Invasion through the 19th century.] Subsequently the Henderson Purchase was repudiated and negated by both British and American governments. Individuals were not allowed to make land purchases. That right was withheld by centralized European governments dealing with tribes as nation-to-nation.
*********************
1792 February 17; Chickamauga Chief Glass and Dragging Canoe's brother, Turtle At Home, waylaid the John Collingsworth family near Nashville, killing the father, mother, and a daughter, and capturing an eight-year-old girl. Returning to Lookout Town (near Trenton, Georgia), they held a scalp dance, grinding one of the scalps in his teeth as he performed. Dragging Canoe, recently returned from
Mississippi after meeting with Choctaws, celebrated the occasion so strenuously that he died the following morning, age ±54.

John Watts of Will's Town (near Fort Payne, Alabama), became the new Chickamauaga leader of the united war effort. Cherokee resistance continued - led a big campaign against settlements in Nashville (Buchanan Station 1793) and in upper east Tennessee led the combined Cherokee-Creek attack at
Cavett's Station in 1793 in which there were no white survivors.

Colonel in the Mexican Army and appointed as Administrator for all of the Indians in East Texas. Peter Ellis Bean was appointed by the Mexican Government to be Indian Agent for East Texas. Upon Fields' return to Texas, he started making an alliance with all Indian tribes in East Texas, urging those in the United States to join him. This excited the Mexican Government on the intentions of the
Cherokees, and the government tried to counter the Cherokee influence with other Indians. A great Cherokee War Chief Tahchee, also known as Dutch, left the Cherokees in Arkansas and crossed the Red River into Texas in 1827. Tahchee and his warriors lived for fighting - anyone, but preferably the Osage Indians.

Iskagua :
Name for "Clear Sky," formerly "Nenetooyah or the Bloody Fellow." The name appears thus in a document of 1791 as that of a Cherokee chief frequently mentioned about that period under the name of "Bloody Fellow." In one treaty it is given as "Eskaqua or Bloody Fellow." Both forms and etymologies are doubtful, neither form seeming to have any reference either to "sky" (galun’lahi) or "blood" (gi’ga). The first may be intended for Ik-e’gwa, "Great day."

...by a KY family it is claimed... Sequoya's father was Nathaniel Gist, son of
the scout who accompanied [George] Washington on his memorable excursion
to the Ohio. As the story goes, Nathaniel Gist was captured by the Cherokee
at Braddock's defeat (1755) and remained a prisoner with them for six years,
during which time he became the father of Sequoyah. On his return to
civilization he married a white woman in VA, by whom he had other children,
and afterward removed to KY, where Sequoyah, then a Baptist preacher,
frequently visited them and was always recognized by the family as his son.

Old Frontiers, by John P Brown, 1938, Southern Publishers, Kingsport, TN, pg 158;

Nathanial Gist first appeared among the Cherokees as a messenger of
Governor Dinwiddie in 1755. Following the French and Indian War he formed a trading partnership with Richard Pearis and lived in the Cherokee country for several years. During that time, he took as his Indian wife, Wurteh, sister of Chief Old Tassel, and became the father of Sequoyah.

[Cherokee Advocate, Aug 6, 1850, Obituary of Nancy Springston]
Born c. 1775 - died July 23, 1850. Her four surviving children were at her side at the time of her death at the house of Anderson Springston. She also had 73 grandchildren.
***********************
John L. Springston's notes on his Miller Application:

Sir: My grandmother on my fathers side was named Nancy. She was a full blood Indian of the Cherokee Tribe. She had four sets of children, Springston, Foreman, Wilson and Doublehead and as I understand the case, she must have been enrolled in 1835,36. 1846 & 1833 or earlier than 1835. I want to find her name and her families by name. My grandfathers name was John. I think he had by his
marriage to her three children - Anderson, my father, & Isaac & Edley Springston. My uncles by her Foreman marriage she had only one I am aware, his name was Jim or James Foreman. By her Doublehead marriage she had only one as far as I know, his name was Bird Doublehead. Her marriage to Wilson I am lost. She died prior to 1851 (this contradicts his other statement). Now as far as the Cherokee Indian record will show her I wish an examination thereof - my father Anderson Springston was born 10-13-1814 and I think Isaac was older than he - Edley I am unable to say.

Nancy, my said grandma had two brothers and two sisters as I was informed by my father & mother both and I ask as to who her census shows they were - if possible - as to claim on them. I cannot be any to certain, or not enough to swear to positive. I ask for such information as is possible from the rolls showing them so I can apply with a certainty.

They were all emigrants and resided in Delaware District Cherokee Nation West and I think in Tennessee East - not far from Gunters Landing on the Tennessee River. It is my desire to apply for all possible where (the rest is illegible). This is signed 10-8-1906.
************************
In another letter he states that she had two brothers and two sisters,

Another letter states:
"Nan-que-se, my grandmother Nancy Springston's niece -- Nancy in same family, the relation bore to each I do not know-- also, Isaac, sister of my grandmother Nancy --Che-ne-lern-ky -- relationship only as fixed by the relationship existing between the named emigrants.

***********************************

We have found no documentation proving that John McDaniel was, in fact, the son of David McDaniel and Sookie Hopper; however, his year of birth and location of birth coincide with that of their son John. This combined with family lore leads us to believe John is their son. He kept his Cherokee heritage secret due to the political upheavals of the time. It was another two generations before the secret was revealed.

The 1803 lottery lists John McDaniel with 2 draws. Both were blanks. He drew again in 1807 and drew lot #175 in 10th District and lot #167 in the 27th District both in Wilkerson Co., GA which joins Washington Co., GA. The lots consisted of 202.5 acres each and the grant fee was $12.50 per acre. For whatever reason he did not keep the Wilkerson Co. lots and eventually the lots reverted back to the state.

It is believed that John and Mary moved to Washington Co., GA near Sandersville about 1790.

Cherokee woman. His father was killed and robbed by two North Carolinans while
on his way home from Charlestown with goods for his establishment. This murder was in 1768 when the son was only twelve years of age, but within the next two years the fair complexioned, auburn haired boy had killed both his father's slayers.

The Texas Cherokees, p10-11: "In January [1810] Duwali, also known as Bowl and Bold Hunter, chief of the Town of Little Hiwassee (on the Hiwassee river, now western NC) and another headman named Saulowee (Tsu-lawi or Fox) jointly conducted a group of seventy five from their villages... Duwali's and Takatoka's people settled along the White and St Francis rivers in present day northeast Arkansas.

The Texas Cherokees, p99: "Bob Smith, with a pistol in his hand, ran toward him from further down the line... I called 'Captain, don't shoot him' but he fired, striking Bowles in the head and killing him instantly." (John Hunter Reagan, eyewitness to Duwali's death, 7/16/1839)

When Diwali saw that his people were going to be overun, he rode to the rear of his small army of warriors and there he waited for the advancing Texans. The 83-year old chief rode with sword and hat given him by his friend Sam Houston. (The sword is now in the Masonic Lodge in Tahlequah Oklahoma.) The old Chief was shot and knocked off his horse, and he rolled over to a sitting position.
While he sat on the ground singing his war song, a Captain Smith rode up, stepped off his horse, and shot the old warrior in the head with a pistol. The Texans would not allow his body to be removed. The bones of the old Chief remained exposed and on the ground until the late 1800's.

1785--Fries' Historical notes:

"The state of Franklin refused to return to North Carolina, and in March elected members of a legislature, which in turn elected John Sevier as governor, appointed county officers, etc., and appointed William Cocke as delegate to the Congress of the United States. Attempts were made to secure the cooperation of the part of Virgina lying west of the mountains, but the Virginia Assembly pronounced the plan treasonable. Thrice during the year it was reported that the Franklinites were negotiating for the incorporation of the Cherokee Indians in the State of Franklin, but not all the chiefs would agree. In November, 1785, the State of Franklin adopted a Constitution." [pg. 2067]

"May 3. The singstunde was attended by Col. Joseph Martin, who spent the
night here on his way to Charleston where he and other Commissioners are to consider the affairs of the Indians. He told us that the Cherokees on the Tennessee River often speak of the visit of Br. Martin Schneider, and seem
to wish that he would come again and stay with them; but that this would not be wise just now when there are certain misunderstandings between them and the white people. He confirmed the report that some time ago the western counties of this State had cut themselves off and assumed the name of Franklin, had elected their own Governor and other state officials, and now had sent a representative to Congress to try to secure recognition as a separate State. Whether this State will agree to the division or will oppose it strongly is as yet most uncertain." [pg. 2080]

Cherokee by Blood, Misc Testimony, P4387, Lucien B Bell, 3/9/1909;

"By an act of the Cherokee Council in about the year 1846 this family was excluded from the Cherokee Nation on the grounds that they were not Cherokees. They questioned the legitimacy of John Vann, the father of Nancy Childres. They claimed that the mother of John Vann was of negro blood, a slave, but they did not have proof of this fact. It was simply a rumor in the country. He looked like an
Indian, as much so, as any one else. When John Vann came to the Indian Territory he was recognized by the Old Settlers as one of their number. He was furnished with the same equipment as the other Indians -- with a gun, blanket, shot pouch, etc. by the government. After the[y] were excluded they were treated as white people and were not enrolled in 1851.

"Catherine left and went to Missouri, and Nancy and her husband remained in the Cherokee Nation. In 1886 the children of Catherine Childres were re-admitted on the ground that they were Cherokee by blood."

43. CORNBLOSSOM5 DOUBLEHEAD (CHIEF4, GREAT3 EAGLE, MOYTOY2, AMATOYA1) was born Abt. 1760 in Stearns, KY, and died August 13, 1810 in Stearns, KY. She married JACOB TROXEL, son of CHRISTIAN? TROXEL and CATHERINE DOERR. He was born 1759 in Frederick Co, MD, and died July 01, 1843 in DeKalb, AL.

Notes for CORNBLOSSOM DOUBLEHEAD:
The below text is from a fellow researcher, I haven't seen the marriage bond it refers to nor have I seen any documentation that constitutes "proof" that Cornblossom was a daughter of Chief Doublehead:

"Princess Cornblossom is the daughter of Chief Chuqualatague aka Chief Doublehead. On 7 April 1803 a marriage Bond was made by Jonathan Blevins and Elisha Blevins to the Honorable James Girrard, Governor of Kentucky, in the sum of fifty pounds to consummate the marriage of Jonathan Blevins to Katy Troxel daughter of Jacob "Big Jake" Troxel and Princess Cornblossom, daughter of Chief Chuqualatague. Consent of Jacob Troxel, father of the bride, was proven by John Troxel.

There is an historical marker located at what is reportedly her burial site in Stearns, Kentucky. Since the historical marker has been moved a reported five times, it is uncertain where Cornblossom was actually buried. She accompanied her father to the signing of the Treaty of Sycamore Shoals, 1775 as a girl. This treaty transferred Cherokee Land between the Ohio River and Cumberland River to the Transylvania Society.

Cornblossom was killed in a massacre which was led by the Franklinites, reportedly a group that followed John Sevier to the future state of Tennessee for the purpose of creating a new nation, or state out of lands then a part of North Carolina. This movement did result in the creation of the State of Franklin. The State of Franklin failed, eventually becoming Tennessee in 1796.

Cornblossom is thought to have been killed in a massacre by white settlers between August 10 th and August 13 th, 1810. The Massacre of Yahoo Falls, Kentucky, Mc Creary County. Seemingly a bit late for the Franklinites (?). "

Notes for JACOB TROXEL:
Per Veterans Administration information, Jacob, not George Jacob is generally as follows. Words, not fact, have been cut: Letter dated October 9, 1935 VA,

Record of only one Jacob Troxel, Pension Claim R.10717. Claim states was born 1759 in Frederick Co, MD, lived there for 13 years, then to Loudon Co, VA. He 1st enlisted winter of 1777, 2nd, winter of 1778 in Captain Ford's company, Colonel Crawford's VA Regiment under General McIntosh's expedition against the Indians. 3rd, 6 months in Captain Lewis' Company, Colonel West's VA Regiment.
Record continues:

He lived in Loudon Co, VA about 19 years, moved back to MD for 4 years, then to Sullivan Co., TN for 4 years, then to Sevier Co, TN for 3 years, thence to Pulaski Co, KY for 20 years (he lived in the part of Pulaski that became Wayne Co in 1804), then to Jackson Co, AL for 4 years, then to Marion Co, TN. And finally:

He died July 1, 1843 in DeKalb Co, AL where he resided. He was survived by his widow Elizabeth, who was denied a pension, probably because she could not document her marriage. Jacob was granted a pension of $43.33 per year. The date of the petition was 23 August 1832. Jacob was 75 years old at that time. The dates he gave conflict with actual county records as below: his grandfather's will was recorded in 1766, the will is thought to have indicated that his father was no longer in Maryland. Jacob was on the Pulaski Co, KY Tax List in 1801 and listed as a delinquent tax payer in Wayne Co, KY in 1820 "moved to Tennessee, and he did not appear in the 1820 Wayne Co, KY Census.

It appears he joined other members of his family in Jackson County, Alabama, his 1st Cousin, Michael Troxel lived there. In Tennessee, his father and Uncle Christian were with him in Sullivan Co. Christian is also found in Pulaski County, Kentucky. (according to Richard M Troxel, in the book, "Troxel(l) Trails", Christian may have been his father) From the letters of Thomas H Troxel; the Troxels trace their ancestry back to the Hebrews of Asia Minor. Peter Troxel (Trachsel) was born in Switzerland in 1691. Peter, his wife and 2 sons came to America on the ship "Samuel" and disembarked in Philadelphia on 17 ___ 1733. A Grandson,
Jacob enlisted in Washington's Colonial Army at age 16 (actually 18) and after 4 years military service, he hit the pioneer trail westward as a trader to the Indians in the Cumberland wilderness, reaching this area during the winter of 1779. (conflict resolution- he and the Blevins did not live here until much later - VA letter states 1802) He was known as Big Jake. (See his wife's Historical Marker, His Monument in Whitley County, KY). At the age of 21, (1779) he married Princess Cornblossom, the daughter of Chief Chuqualatague, major chief of the Cumberlands. (From the Ohio River to perhaps central Tennessee) Their son, Little Jake became chief of the AsQuaw Tribe (Red Tribe) at the age of 21(not an historical fact).

Many of the things told in Thomas Troxel's letters have been supported by the records of Pulaski County and Wayne County, Kentucky. (It is thought that Thomas was also a chief of his people, the Cherokee) Thomas is more than likely Jacobs grandson.

George Jacob is not usually associated with "Big Jake" except in the book "Troxel Trails". A descendant did bear this name, thus it is possible that "George has been "applied". Two given names were unusual at his date of birth.

57. ALLEN5 MCDANIEL (JOHN4, SOOKIE "GRANNY"3 HOPPER, OLD2 HOP, AMATOYA1 MOYTOY) was born 1798 in Washington Co, GA, and died 1847 in Arkansas. He married SOPHIA WILLIAMS March 27, 1825 in Pike Co, GA. She was born October 16, 1805, and died July 26, 1867 in Eutaw, Limestone Co, TX.

Notes for ALLEN MCDANIEL:
After the death of his father John McDaniel, Allen, with his mother, sisters, and brothers, moved to Pike Co., GA and settled in the 7th District near Zebulon.
About 1842 reports reached Georgia of a wonderful and unsettled country west of the Mississippi River called Texas. Texas had won her independence from Mexico. Allen and Sophia took their family and joined the next caravan going west in 1843. They sold their property, some livestock and other things that could not be taken on journey. They carried with them feather beds, pillows, quilts, clothes for the family, buckskin coats, tubs filled with dishes and cooking utensils, coffee mill, spinning wheels and looms. They also took their best milk cow.
After many weeks of traveling with the caravan, they came to Kosciusko, MS. Many of the wagon train decided to stay a year in Kosciusko before travelling on to Texas. Allen and Sophia found several more McDaniels in the area. There were twelve or more land owners and voters listed in the tax rolls, some as early as 1841. Allen and Sophia decided to stay here for a time. Allen McDaniel was listed in the Atalla Co. tax roll of 1846, but not in 1848. His wife Sophia McDaniel was listed as head of household in the 1850 census of Atalla Co., Kosciousko, MS.
Some of the family say Allen McDaniel died while on a trip to Arkansas, but was buried in McDaniel Cemetery in Kosciusko, MS.

1825 GA Tax Digest:
Allen McDaniel-1 poll-101 1/2 acres 2nd class land
101 1/2 acres 3rd class land on the Tobusopkie Creek adj Jinks.

Notes for SOPHIA WILLIAMS:
Several years after her husband's death and at her sons' urgings, Sophia and some of her family joined another wagon train. After a long journey, she purchases 200 acres south of Eutaw, Limestone Co., Texas.

Notes for ALLEN WILSON MCDANIEL:
(aka Uncle Tom)
Allen was with his family when they migrated from GA to MS in the early 1840's. His older brothers had settled in Limestone Co., TX and when he was 21 years old, he left Kosciousko, MS, joined A.W. Brown's Company in 1855 and came by wagon to Shelby Co., TX. He continued the rest of his journey on foot and reached Eutaw, Limestone Co. three weeks later. He often related his experiences of tramping across the unsettled country of East Texas with no company except a variety of wild game and birds of every specie and color. He walked along the Indian trails, though he never encountered Indians, and reached his brother's home with $35.00 in his pocket. He farmed two years with his brother, but didn't realize much profit. He drove a freight wagon drawn by eight mules, delivering freight from the chief trading center of Houston, TX. Hauling supplies to Eutaw and other Texas settlements and freight from the interior to Houston was work from "sun to sun." His pay was $3.00 per day. Many times the mules had all they could do to pull the heavily loaded wagon over muddy roads, with axle in mud. After rains, the creeks and no bridges made it almost impassable, but deliveries had to be made.
When Allen married Adeline McKinley, he was the third McDaniel brother to marry into Charles C. McKinley's family. After the marriage, he contracted for 200 acres near Eutaw.
During the Civil War, Allen enlisted in Captain McGee's Army, Col. Bass Regiment, 20th Texas Cavalry, Co., K at Eutaw. After a year Capt. McGee died and Capt. Wiley Pickens Brown succeeded him. Allen served in the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), Arkansas, and Missouri. He participated in many hard fought battles and many skirmishes. On July 17, 1863 in the Arkansas region there was a battle in which Allen McDaniel's brother-in-law, James Franklin McKinley, was killed. His horse was standing near his master when Allen found him. At the close of the war Allen led the horse back to Texas and to the McKinley home. Once when Allen and four other soldiers were thinly clad and scarce of food, they were on guard duty at Fayetteville, AR. All became ill and died, but Allen McDaniel. He was left alone to guard until help came.
In the spring of 1885, Allen purchased several hundred acres of land eight miles north of Kosse, TX. He paid $3.00 per acre and was offered $100.00 per acre before he died. He refused to sell and gave each of his children a farm.       Buried in Eutaw Cemetery.

Notes for ALBERT CARL MCDANIEL:
Albert attended Locust Grove School and Pleasant Grove School, Tehuacana College and Sam Houston Normal, Houston, TX. He received a certificate for the purpose of teaching in the public schools. He taught his first school in the Indian Territory called the Chickasaw Nation. After one term he returned to Texas where he taught for several terms at Locust Grove. At first he taught all grades from Primary to the Tenth grades. Soon the trustees employed a primary teacher. There were between sixty and seventy students. His last school was at Little Brazos, three miles south of Odds. He used his horse and a cart for transportation.
After 10 years as a teacher, he decided to farm. He would cultivate the farm at Odds and the one at Criswell and live at Criswell. A house had to be built and then a school. Several families in the community were eager to have a school provided for their children and they appointed Albert C. McDaniel to petition the County Superintendent in the interest of the Criswell School. Not long after, lumber was on the ground and the men of the community built the school. The school house was also used for Sunday School and church as well as a social center for singings, box suppers, and other programs. Although schools consolidated, the Criswell School House was being used fifty years later as a Community Center where people met to sing and attend church of different denominations.
Albert Carl McDaniel lived to be almost 93 years old. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Marlin, TX.

  7. I am a descendant of Su-Gi "Granny" Hopper through her daughter: Agnes Susannah McDaniel. This is very interesting info, but wondered about your sources and if you had the descendants of Agnes Susannah McDaniel anywhere in your research? Also, I have two possible spouses of Su-Gi "Sookie" Granny Hopper. One is David James McDaniel, and another is Moses Cornelius McDaniel. Thank you for your input.

    1. I am also looking into Su-Gi "Granny" Hopper but through her daughter Rachel McDaniel. I have found Willian James David as her husband, but there isn't any documentation to back the information up. His last name is McDaniel, but all the information I have found says they can't find a first name.

  8. I am looking for my 2nd great grandfather. I haven't found any info on him. It was originally suggested he was related to Granny Hop. His name is Charles E. McDaniel b.1816ish d. 1865. His wife was Lydia Horn b. 1819 d.1865 they both past when a train boiler exploded. He may have been married to a Jane M. Blakely to. . If anyone know of them I would appreciate knowing about them and who is dad was. They may have come from Scotland or Ireland?
